Kenny Baker; 1934 - 2016

Kenny Baker tragically passed just 11 days shy of his 82nd Birthday, on the 13th August 2016; saddening fans across the globe.
The genius behind R2-D2 had been battling an extended illness, of which had prevented him from attending The Force Awakens premiere in Los Angeles; December 2015.

Standing at 3 ft 8 inches, Baker's career extended from that of R2; even within the saga itself; playing the beloved Ewok Paploo, who infamously steals a speed bike in 1983's Return of the Jedi.
Outside of his roles in episodes 1-6, Baker also starred in films such as Flash Gordon (1980), The Elephant Man (1980), and Jim Henson's Labyrinth (1986).
The actor also contributed as an R2-D2 consult for Episode 7; regenerating the energy and witt of R2 we became so accustomed to.

Many tributes have been made to Baker including;

Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma Ep7), Roger Christian (creator of the first R2D2), Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Ep1-3), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) and George Lucas Himself.

Lucas stated;

'Kenny was truly the heart and soul of R2-D2, and will be missed by all his fans, and everyone who knew him.'

Kenny Baker's passing is another great loss we have suffered this year; but his talent and memory will live on as the Star wars saga continues; with episode 8's expected releae in December 2017.
